Fishing Orientation

So you want to fish at Caugh, do you?  In Quebec’s most productive fishing region there are many places to discover.  Before you go, there is plenty of information to digest and we ask that you spend the time and read this orientation.

Getting Started

The club maintains boats and canoes in many of the proximity lakes for member use on a user fee basis.  We encourage you to be introduced to each lake by a knowledgeable member or guide because getting to know the area is in everyone’s best interest.  We request this for a number of reasons:

1.  Many of the ponds are accessible by portages and trails.  We don’t want you getting lost.  Spending an afternoon wandering in the bush is not a pleasant experience.  So make sure you have an itinerary, tell a member or one of the club’s guardians where you are going and when you will be back, and use the buddy system.

2.  Many of the ponds are unknown to the local population, and we wish to keep it that way.  It assures us of bountiful fishing.  Practice catch and release.

3.  There is etiquette and safety relating to Fish and Game regulations.  The ecosystem is fragile and is in need of your respect.

4.  Boat care and usage is integral to everyone’s enjoyment at Caughnawana.

5.  We know where most of the “slightly” submerged rocks are.

6.  You will have a better understanding of the lake, its “hot-spots” and shore lunch locations.

Reserving a Boat

To reserve a boat consider doing so when you make the arrangements to come to Caughnawana.  Booking ahead helps to ensure the you’ll be fishing where and when you want.  If you’re already here, simply go to the clubhouse and find one of the staff.  They will assist you with making the reservation. Reserving a boat, whether you use it or not, will result in a charge to your account.  So please keep us informed should you not be following through with a reservation for two reasons:

1.  We will make the necessary adjustment to your account.

2.  Other members may be wanting to go into that lake and are waiting for a cancellation.

For a listing of boat rental costs, See the 2022 Club Price List.

Note: Due to the law and liability requirements on Club boat operations, it will now be necessary to show proof of possession of a Government of Canada Pleasure Craft Boat Operator License when using/renting a club motorboat boat or canoe.

Did you know?

Most of the club boats at Caughnawana are kept under lock and key.  There is a distinct lettering and number system for each key and each boat location.   For example, there is a Upper Twin Pond canoe key.  And a Green Lake Number 1 boat key.   All keys are checked out at the clubhouse and are to be returned at the end of your day or outing.   Be sure to get the right key for the right occasion.

Safety Tip

Don’t forget to use life jackets/vests on your canoeing and boating trips while at Caughnawana.  This is especially true when journeying into one of the remote canoe-only ponds.   Extra life jackets/vests can be found in the rear of the fish cleaning station by the club’s main docks.
