Driving directions to Caughnawana for the 2024 season are as follows:

Caughnawana via Temiscaming and the Maniwaki Road

1 – Entering North Bay from the south or east (Toronto, Ottawa) turn right at the third set of lights onto Trout Lake Road, just past the Northgate Mall. (Note: If entering North Bay from the West (Sudbury) you will of course turn left on Trout Lake Rd at the West side of the Northgate Mall)

2 – Trout Lake Road turns into the highway for Temiscaming.

3 – After crossing the Ottawa River at the Temiscaming pulp mill turn left at the stop sign.

4 –  Take the next right just before the Esso service station.

5 – At the four way stop with flashing red lights, turn right.

6 – After 8.2 kms you will see a MacEwen gas station on your right (now closed but sign still up). Turn right, then turn left immediately to stop at the ZEC checkpoint for your vehicle permit and ZEC permit if you have not already obtained them online. As usual your Quebec Fishing License will be available at the club.

7 – From the checkpoint the road is paved for about 4 kms then turns to a wide straight gravel road. Note the small blue “KM” markers posted along the side of the road. Continue until you get exactly to the 55 KM marker then turn right. Be very careful not to turn at KM 54 which indicates access to ZEC Restigo. The turn is exactly at KM 55 and has a sign indicating Caugnawana Lake.

8 – Go 22KM following what is clearly the main traveled road. There are little yellow mileage signs every KM  along the way but some are obscured by foliage but watch for them as there are many appealing side roads. The route to Caugnawana is clearly marked by ZEC posted signs. At KM 16 you will pass through a trailer park on Petit Jardin and just past KM 22 you will encounter a fork with a yellow sign F1. There is also a sign pointing to Caugnawana so turn left at F1.

9 – Follow the road for 2 KMs to another major fork F2 ( yellow sign and painted red rock indicating the direction to Hamilton. There is also a sign pointing to Caugnawana so turn right here.

10 – Stay on the main road for another 4 KMs again watching for the signs pointing to Caugnawana at any major intersection. Avoid the left fork to Hamilton and keep right to reach the landing at Restigo with club boats and an old trailer. Straight ahead 1/2 KM brings you to the old Route 26 on which you turn right. 5 KM along this route will bring you to an orange highway pylon. Turn right on the 1 KM Caughnawana club access road.

As a safety precaution it is always wise to let the guardian know your travel plans.

Useful Tips

For many members the drive to Caughnawana is the first part of an enjoyable excursion.  That said, it is important to remember that once across the Ottawa River eastward, there is very little in the way of roadside assistance services.  So here are some useful things to know:

– Be sure to fill your car with gas prior to journeying into Caughnawana.  The nearest gas stations are in Temiscaming.  Remember to calculate consumption for both your inbound & outbound journeys.  The Club does not provide fuel service in camp for vehicles.

– Please make certain you check in and out with the Zec station.  Retain all paperwork on your dashboard for inspection.

– The ideal vehicles for travelling on the Zec roads are 4WD SUVs and pick up trucks.  FWD Minivans with high road clearance are also preferable.  What is not advisable are using low ground vehicles of high or sentimental value. There are ‘bumpy spots’ and ruts and after heavy rainfall, deep pools of water to ford, on the roads which, without extreme care, can cause a typical car to bottom out or get stuck.

– There are a number of loose stones, pot holes, creeks, and puddles to overcome on the journey into the club.  Drive slow, bear right on all curves, head lights on,  and proceed safely cresting hills and most of all,  take your time.  The landscape and fauna along the road is spectacular so there is no reason to rush.  Please keep a careful watch for wildlife (moose, bears, deer, etc) that may jump out onto the roadway, at any time.

– At this time there is no cellular telephone service along the road to Caughnawana.  It is advisable to call the Guardians to let them know you are driving in, if you are expected for meals or accommodation.

– The club invests considerable resources each season to keep the roads in good repair.   We work closely with the ZEC and local governments in this regard.  Experience has taught us, however, that much of the work on road repair falls on our shoulders to ensure our member’s safe passage in and out of the the property.  Each spring, a considerable investment is made by the club to clear the section of road between km 55 on the Maniwaki and the club.  Frequently club guardian invests his time to keep the road clear of fallen trees and repair washouts but it is not a bad idea to bring an axe or saw in case you encounter a fallen tree.
