CLUB HISTORY

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CLUB:

Located in Quebec, 20 air miles north of the Ottawa River, the region is the centre of many geological and natural wonders and as a result it has captured the hearts and imaginations of many people.  The breathtaking Gatineau Hills start here, as well the Caughnawana watershed flows both north and southeast feeding many other lakes and ponds.  For fishers, the waters of the Caughnawana region are some of the most productive in the province of Quebec for trout, pickerel, and pike.   For hunters, the region provides excellent moose, bear, and upland bird shooting.  And for those who simply enjoy the outdoors, Caughnawana is a wilderness playground of untouched natural splendor.

The club was founded in 1895 by a group of New York business executives who were enchanted by the area’s great fishing and hunting.  Five years later, in 1899, the Caughnawana Fishing and Hunting Club was incorporated to its present form as a private non-profit club.  Originally the club had lease arrangements covering some 100 square miles for exclusive member use.  In the late 1970’s the Quebec government, with a heart open to the resources for all, cancelled the private leases across the province.  Subsequently the government introduced a system of provincial parks known as “Zecs” (Zone Exploitation Controle).    Presently the Club owns 165 acres of shoreline property within the original lease area; and the club is located in Zec Restigo.

The Caughnawana Fishing and Hunting Club truly is something special.  It’s not just any fishing and hunting club, it is a piece of Canadianna unlike anything else in the country.
